Multichoice Ltd, the South Africa-owned operator of the country’s dominant DSTV channels was still mum hours after GWG.ng asked for a response to the claim that the company blocked Nigerians from viewing the penalty save made by Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali during the tensed semifinal match between Nigeria and South Africa last Wednesday.

GWG.ng reports that what was thought as a technical glitch that prevented many Nigerians from watching the penalty save turned into a controversial debate when it emerged that other streamers of the match showed the epic moment that Nigeria’s dominance over South Africa in the encounter became obvious when Teboho Mokoena’s penalty attempt was blocked by Nwabali.

Amidst the intense scrutiny, Reno Omokri, former aide to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, took to social media to express his dismay, claiming that DSTV had deliberately blocked the crucial moment. Omokri urged Nigerians to turn to local broadcasters such as NTA, Channels, and AIT for coverage, emphasizing the importance of supporting indigenous companies.

His sentiments struck a chord with many netizens, who echoed his sentiments and criticized DSTV for what they perceived as biased coverage against the Super Eagles. However, amidst the uproar, attention shifted to Glo, a Nigerian telecommunications company, as users lamented the poor network quality, with some opting to use competing networks like MTN instead.

As discussions swirled around the alleged censorship by DSTV of the Super Eagles and the call for support of local businesses, Glo found itself in the spotlight for its network reliability issues. Netizens seized the opportunity to urge the company to address these concerns, highlighting the importance of dependable telecommunications infrastructure, especially during high-stakes events like the AFCON tournament.

GWG.ng reports that the controversy surrounding the alleged blocked penalty moment by the Super Eagles goalkeeper by DSTV serves as a reminder of the power dynamics at play in the media landscape, prompting broader conversations about media ownership, national pride, and consumer choice in Nigeria.

Recall that GWG.ng reported that following Nigeria’s dramatic victory over South Africa in a tense penalty shootout in the AFCON semifinal cracker of last Wednesday, reports of threats against the Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali in his South Africa base emerged.

The threats came after Stanley Nwabali turned out to be the Man of the Match rubbishing the previous heroic goal-keeping records of his South African counterpart, Ronwen Williams.
