The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared a nationwide protest, scheduled for September 15, 2024, to kick against the recent hike in petrol prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The protest notice by NANS follows NNPCL’s decision to increase the pump price of petrol from ₦617 per litre to ₦897 per litre, effective September 3. This sharp increase has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with NANS leading the charge against what it describes as an “egregious act.”

In a strongly worded statement titled “Fuel Price Hike: A Threat to Our Future,” NANS National Senate President, Henry Okunomo, expressed the association’s deep dissatisfaction with the price hike. He criticized the move as a severe blow to the future of Nigerian students and the wider population, calling for an immediate reversal.

“This is an unjustifiable burden on the Nigerian people, especially students who are already struggling with the rising cost of living,” Okunomo said. “We cannot sit idly by while our future is being threatened by policies that only deepen our suffering.”

NANS has called on all Nigerian students, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens to join the peaceful protest on September 15, vowing to “rise in unison” to demand a more compassionate approach to governance. The association emphasized the importance of standing together in this critical moment to ensure the voices of the masses are heard.

NANS in justifying its protest also leveled harsh criticism at the NNPCL, accusing it of “gross incompetence” and failing to fulfill its mandate of stable petrol supply. NANS described the NNPCL as a “behemoth of inefficiency,” stating that the organization’s actions are perpetuating a cycle of hardship and despair for the Nigerian people.

As the date for the strike approaches, NANS remains resolute in its demand for the government to reconsider the fuel price hike and adopt policies that prioritize the well-being of Nigerian students and the broader population.
