Nigerians Mock How INEC Would Have Announced Kamala Harris Winner Of US Election
Many Nigerians became deeply ‘involved’ in the recent U.S. 2024 election, showing strong support for their preferred candidates, particularly Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
While election results poured in, netizens humorously revisited Nigeria’s own electoral controversies by throwing sarcastic jabs at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) noting how it could have turned the election to favour Hamala Harris.. Reminiscent of Nigeria’s February 25, 2023, general elections, many social media users joked about how INEC might have influenced the outcome if it were involved.
With Trump in the lead, posts emerged tagging INEC as Harris’s only hope. Statements like, “Only this INEC man fit help Kamala Harris right now,” began trending, humorously calling on Nigeria’s election umpire to somehow change the tide.
Even after the results were confirmed, the satire continued. Photos of Harris and Trump were edited, showing Harris with an altered score of 280 and Trump with 100. Captions like “Go to court” and “Breaking news, INEC declares Kamala winner” mocked the idea of a sudden reversal in her favor.
X user @firstladyship pointed out the stark differences between the U.S. and Nigerian electoral processes, tweeting, “In Nigeria, only INEC can announce results, unlike in the U.S., where the media projects. America is ruled by the people, while Nigeria is controlled by an establishment.” She further noted, “A judge extended voting in Clearfield County, PA, due to a bomb threat. In Nigeria, judicial decisions often align with executive directives.”
Nature is Beautiful @erotichal remarked on the disparity in speed, saying, “In less than 24 hours, results were out in the U.S., but in Nigeria, INEC took 4–5 days, only to announce the results at midnight like a thief.”
@Biodunnikani replied, “Correction, several decades backward.”
@Ramotaolaniyi posted an edited result sheet, joking, “Americans should come and learn from INEC. Their judges need lessons from former CJN Ariwola.”
The light-hearted jests highlight Nigerians’ ongoing frustrations with their electoral system while drawing humor from contrasting it with the U.S.
