Lawyer Who Led Trump’s Prosecution Resigns, Flees America
By Gideon Ayeni
Jack Smith, the lawyer who spearheaded the prosecution against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, has reportedly resigned and left the United States.
According to a report filed with U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, the lawyer completed his work in the case against Donald Trump and submitted his final confidential report on January 7 before making the decision to resign.
Smith, a lawyer was responsible for leading the legal proceedings against Donald Trump over the alleged mishandling of classified documents after he left office, as well as his involvement in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
However, following Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential race, Smith and his team made the decision to drop all charges against the president-elect. Sources close to lawyer’s team have stated that, while they believed the charges were valid, they were ultimately unable to continue pursuing them due to Trump’s imminent return to the presidency.
This unexpected development comes at a critical time in U.S. politics, as Trump prepares to take office again. Smith’s resignation and departure from the country have raised questions about the future of ongoing legal challenges facing the president-elect.
