President Joe Biden has issued pardons to several high-profile individuals previously targeted by former President-elect Donald Trump for investigation.

The move aims to shield them from politically motivated probes tied to their roles in defending democratic processes and public health.

Among those pardoned are Dr. Anthony Fauci, lauded for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic; General Mark Milley, recognized for his four decades of military service; and key members of the January 6th Committee, including Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. Additionally, Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone, known for their testimonies about the violent Capitol riots, were granted clemency.

In a statement, President Biden affirmed his decision, emphasizing that the individuals had served the nation with honor and integrity. He condemned Trump’s efforts to undermine democracy and target those who courageously defended it.

“These brave men and women have stood on the front lines for our country’s health, security, and democratic values,” Biden said. “They should not be subjected to political persecution for doing their duty.”

The pardons have drawn both praise and criticism, further deepening the divide over accountability for the events surrounding the January 6th attack and the broader handling of the pandemic.
