Man Cutting Off Wife’s Wrist

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested Sunday Echege, a 33-year-old man, for allegedly cutting off his wife’s wrist due to suspicions of infidelity.

The incident occurred on Sunday in Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement, located in the Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka council area, where the suspect resides.

“The arrest was made possible with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, and the machete used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect,” said Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect admitted to the crime, claiming he acted out of suspicion that his wife, Chinonso Echege, was involved in extramarital affairs. “The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” Ndukwe added.

The state’s Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, also spoke out about the case. “This is yet another sad development, which we are following up with to ensure that justice is done,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of combating gender-based violence.

Enih continued, saying, “We have information that the man aimed for the wife’s head during a disagreement, but ended up chopping off the left hand with which she tried to fend off the machete. She also sustained injury on the right hand.” The victim has been moved to Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, where she is receiving medical care.

“We swung into action immediately we got the information and had him arrested. He is now in police custody,” Enih explained. She added that the government is taking the matter very seriously, with Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the wife of the governor, personally ensuring justice. “The suspect will be moved to the Police Force CID, Enugu today for a thorough investigation. From there, the law will take its full course,” Enih concluded.
