Namibia’s First President

Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma, passed away at the age of 95 in the capital, Windhoek. His death was announced by President Nangolo Mbumba, who described it as a moment of “utmost sorrow and sadness.”

Nujoma was a key figure in Namibia’s fight for independence from South African rule. In the 1960s, he helped establish the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), which led the liberation struggle. When Namibia gained independence in 1990, he became the country’s first president and served until 2005. He later stepped down as SWAPO leader in 2007 after 47 years at the helm.

The late leader had been hospitalized for three weeks with an illness before he passed away. President Mbumba hailed Nujoma’s legacy, saying, “He inspired us to rise to our feet and become masters of this vast land of our ancestors. Our founding father lived a long and consequential life, exceptionally serving his beloved country.”

Nujoma is remembered for his role in maintaining peace and stability after independence. His policy of national reconciliation as the first president encouraged Namibia’s white minority to remain and continue contributing to key sectors such as agriculture. He was also a champion of social justice, advocating for women’s and children’s rights, including policies to ensure fathers took financial responsibility for children born out of wedlock.

His passing has drawn widespread tributes, both in Namibia and across Africa. Namibia’s Vice President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is set to become the country’s next president in March, credited Nujoma’s “visionary leadership” for laying the foundation of a “free, united nation.”

African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat described him as “the epitome of courage, never wavering from his vision for a free Namibia and a unified Africa.” Kenya’s President, William Ruto, also paid tribute, calling him a “visionary leader” who dedicated his life to Namibia’s liberation and development.

Nujoma’s death marks the end of an era for Namibia, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, leadership, and nation-building beyond his position as the country’s first president.
