Nigeria Customs Announces Duty-Free Importation Of Medical Equipment
By Benjamin Abioye

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the implementation of a new policy allowing the duty-free importation of essential medical equipment.
This initiative is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system by making critical medical devices more accessible and affordable. The policy is in line with the government’s broader efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and ensure that medical facilities across the country are well-equipped.
To maintain transparency and monitor the implementation of this policy, the NCS has committed to compiling quarterly reports. These reports will provide detailed information on all medical imports under this exemption, including duties on importers, the quantities of medical equipment brought into the country, and their total value. By tracking these imports, the NCS aims to ensure that the policy remains effective and serves its intended purpose.
In a statement, the NCS reaffirmed its dedication to supporting government policies while carrying out its responsibilities of trade facilitation, border security, and national development. The agency emphasized that collaboration between all stakeholders, including importers, manufacturers, and relevant government agencies, is crucial to the success of this initiative.
“The Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to supporting government policies while fulfilling its mandate to facilitate trade, enhance border security, and drive national development. Successful implementation of this policy requires collaboration from all stakeholders, including importers, manufacturers, and relevant government agencies,” the statement read.
The NCS further stressed the importance of collective efforts in achieving the goal of a well-functioning healthcare sector that serves the needs of all Nigerians. “Through our collective efforts, we can achieve the shared goal of a robust healthcare sector that meets the needs of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the country by removing financial barriers to the importation of vital medical equipment. With this policy in place, the NCS expects to see a positive impact on the availability of medical devices, ultimately benefiting hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare providers.
