NYSC To Pay Arrears Of N77,000 Allowance To Outgoing Corps Members
By Benjamin Abioye

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that corps members who recently completed their service will be paid the arrears of their N77,000 allowance.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made this assurance during the Batch A 2025 pre-mobilisation workshop held in Abuja.
He confirmed that the payment, which had been delayed, will be made once the funds are released. “The government is quite conscious of its promise, and within the budgetary provision, the government will handle that. Once funds are available, we will pay the arrears, including for those who recently completed their service,” Nafiu said. He further assured that the corps members’ bank details are already in the system, and payment will be made as soon as the cash backing is received.
In addition to the payment updates, the Director of Corps Mobilisation, Mohammed Abubakar, addressed the challenges still facing the NYSC. He particularly highlighted the issue of tertiary institutions uploading unqualified graduates for national service. “While we have made remarkable progress in reducing challenges, we still face serious issues, especially concerning the fraudulent uploading of unqualified graduates,” Abubakar stated. He emphasized the need to address this ongoing problem, urging all stakeholders to stay proactive in dealing with these challenges.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, also called for reforms in the NYSC to align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration. He recalled that the scheme was created in 1973 for a specific purpose but pointed out that the country’s needs have changed since then. “We must reform the scheme to meet the demands of our changing society,” Olawande said. He stressed that the reform process should not be solely the responsibility of the government but a collaborative effort involving all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), assured that the FCT administration would continue to support the NYSC in fulfilling its objectives. Represented by Abdullahi Suleiman, the Mandate Secretary for Youth and Sports in the FCTA, Wike emphasized the importance of the FCT’s partnership with the NYSC during the service year.
These discussions are part of ongoing efforts to address challenges within the NYSC and improve the service for future generations.
