Judge Sends Ndume To Jail For Maina’s Escape
Former Senate Leader and chairman Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume is to be remanded in Kuje Prison until he produces wanted alleged pension thief, Abdulrasheed Maina Justice Okon Abang ruled on Monday.
In the alternative, the judge ruled that Ndume should sell off his N500 million property in the Asokoro Area of Abuja and deposit the money which was the bond set for the release of Maina on bail.
Senator Ndume had stood surety for Maina who is his constituent in Borno South Senatorial district whenN Justice Abang granted him bail in respect of his trial over an alleged N2billion money laundering trial.
Maina has avoided repeated court sessions and Ndume has not been able to produce him.
The judge in giving his order on Monday asked that the Senator be kept in Kuje prison until he meets the conditions for his release.
The order came after Ndume failed to file a formal application to show cause why he should not forfeit the bail bond of N500 million deposed to on May 5 to stand as surety for Maina.
The EFCC’s Lawyer, Mohammed Abubakar, had, on Nov. 18, asked the court to make an order for the lawmaker to forfeit the bail bond since Maina, who he stood as surety for, had jumped bail.
Abubakar also asked the court to revoke Maina’s bail and issued a warrant of arrest on him.
Although the court granted the applications by the EFCC on Maina, it gave Ndume an opportunity to appear with his legal representation and adjourned until Dec. 23.
Justice Abang, in his ruling, ordered Ndume’s remand pending the time he was able to fulfill the bail bond or produce Maina in court.
