Electoral Act: Supreme Court To Hear Buhari, Malami’s Suit May 19th

The Supreme Court has fixed Thursday May 19th as the date a suit by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami on the electoral act will be heard.

The parties in the case have since been served hearing notices.

The National Assembly is listed as the sole defendant in the suit filed on April 29, 2022, marked: SC/CV/504/2022.

The plaintiffs are contending among others, that the said section of the Electoral Act 2022 is in conflict with constitutional provisions.

Recall that GWGNG earlier reported that the Senate amended the Electoral Act 2022, to allow ‘statutory delegates’ to participate and vote in political parties’ conventions, congresses and meetings.

This followed the passage of the amendment bill on the act at the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday the 10th of May in Abuja.

The bill was sponsored by Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege. However, aides and other appointees of the president and governors were not included in the amendment.

Presenting the bill, Omo-Agege said that it sought to amend the provision of Section 84(8) of the Electoral Act.
