United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, touched down, Tuesday evening at the Presidential Villa in Nigeria for an official visit with President Bola Tinubu, where the two engaged in a bilateral meeting at the State House, Abuja.

The top US diplomat was warmly received at the forecourt of President Tinubu’s office at approximately 6:55 pm. Notable government officials present included the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; and Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake.

After their meeting, a joint press conference is slated with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, prior to Blinken’s departure for Lagos later this evening. In Lagos, he is scheduled to engage with the business community.

Blinken’s visit is part of a West African sub-region tour, underscoring the US commitment to strengthening relations with democracies in the subregion amid global challenges. His prior stops include Cape Verde and Ivory Coast, and his subsequent destination is Angola.

GWG.ng reports that the Blinken visit to Nigeria comes following years of suspicious relationship between the two countries and the trip was beleived to have been instigated by fears that Nigeria may be turning its search for reliable friends towards the east.
