The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently destroyed substandard products, including counterfeit pharmaceuticals and medical devices, valued at ₦43 billion.

The destruction took place on Thursday at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan, Oyo State.

GWG.ng reports that representatives from various security agencies and the Oyo State Government were present to oversee the exercise. NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Christiana Mojisola Adeyeye, was represented by Pharm Shabba Mohammed, the Director of Investigation and Enforcement.

Professor Adeyeye explained that the products were voluntarily surrendered to the agency by compliant companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and trade unions. She detailed the extensive efforts taken to seize both registered and unregistered pharmaceutical products through a series of raids conducted in multiple locations.

“The confiscated items included over thirty different products, such as aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement medications, over-the-counter drugs, and prescription-only pharmaceuticals,” she stated. Among the seized items were banned substances like codeine and narcotics, valued at more than ₦48 million.

The agency also gathered intelligence on illegal warehousing, sale, and distribution of narcotics by pharmaceutical vendors in Lagos and other states. “Recent raids by the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate led to the confiscation of products worth over ₦700 million,” Adeyeye added.

In addition to counterfeit pharmaceuticals, the operation targeted contraband items like unregistered soaps, tomato paste, and counterfeit beverages. Adeyeye emphasized the importance of public involvement in the fight against counterfeit drugs and substandard food items, urging individuals to report illegal activities to the nearest NAFDAC office for immediate action.

“Through these efforts, NAFDAC aims to protect public health and safety while ensuring compliance within the pharmaceutical industry,” she concluded.
