Speed Darlington Freed from Kuje Prison
By Benjamin Abioye

Controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, has been released from Kuje Prison.
Lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, shared the news on Tuesday, confirming that Speed Darlington, also known as Akpi, was finally free.
Adeyanju posted on X, stating, “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.” The singer’s release came after an Abuja court granted him bail. This followed pressure on the Nigeria Police Force, leading to Okoye’s arraignment in court.
Before his release, Okoye had written a petition to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi. In the petition, Okoye urged the DIG to respect a court order challenging his prolonged detention by the police.
Okoye had been arrested after accusing Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy of having an improper relationship with American music executive Sean Combs, known as P. Diddy.
On December 23, 2024, Justice M.S. Liman ruled that the police must either charge Okoye in court within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.
