Tinubu Names Ex Lagos Commissioner As NRC MD
By Benjamin Abioye

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Kayode Opeifa as the new Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).
Opeifa, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, takes over from Ben Iloanusi, who had been serving as the acting managing director since Fidet Okhiria’s departure on October 18, 2024, after completing his second term.
Opeifa gained recognition for his work as the Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos under Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration. During this time, he introduced policies that modernized the city’s transport system, improved traffic management, and helped position Lagos as a leading model for urban transport in Africa.
Building on his success in Lagos, Opeifa was later appointed as the Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He also played a significant role in tackling the notorious traffic gridlock at Lagos’ Apapa ports.
As Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT), he worked alongside former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to find sustainable solutions to the traffic congestion, earning national recognition for his expertise in the transportation sector.
Now, as the head of the NRC, Opeifa is tasked with advancing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure and services, a critical responsibility for the country’s transportation development.
