Atiku, Obi Mourn Victims Of Enugu Tanker Explosion
By Benjamin Abioye

Former presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have expressed their condolences to the victims of the tragic tanker explosion in Enugu State.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday at Ugwu Onyeama in Enugu North, claimed the lives of about 15 people.
This tragedy comes just a week after another devastating tanker explosion in Niger State, where nearly 100 individuals died while attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker at Ditto Junction in Suleja.
Reacting to the Enugu explosion, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar lamented the recurring nature of such incidents and called for a thorough investigation to address the underlying issues. “Oh dear, not again! My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all the victims in the fuel tanker explosion in Enugu State. May their souls find eternal rest. The incidents of tragic tanker explosions have reached emergency levels. It is time for the government to establish an inquiry into this issue,” he said.
In a similar vein, Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, expressed his concern about the frequency of such tragedies and urged the government to take decisive measures to prevent further loss of life and property.
“Exactly one week after a petrol tanker explosion in Niger State killed nearly a hundred persons and injured many, another explosion has just been reported in Enugu, leaving 15 persons dead,” Obi stated.
He added, “The frequency of occurrence of these tragic incidents is very concerning. This month alone, there have been at least three such devastating accidents across the country, resulting in the loss of precious lives and properties.
“We must begin to truly prioritise the safety and security of lives and property by implementing measures that drastically mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, which have now become too many. We need to focus on fixing our existing roads, implementing strict road safety measures, and educating our people on observing the right protocols around accident scenes.”
Obi also prayed for the victims’ families and extended sympathy to the people of Enugu State. “My heart goes out to the families who are devastated by the loss of their loved ones to this terrible accident. I also sympathize with the government and people of Enugu State over this tragic occurrence. May God grant eternal rest to the dead and grant quick healing to the injured. May God grant us the fortitude to bear such irreplaceable loss,” he said.
Both leaders emphasized the need for urgent action to prevent such heartbreaking tragedies from becoming a norm in the country.
