HURIWA Attack Senator Natasha Home

A pro-democracy and civil rights group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has condemned what it described as a shocking assassination attempt on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The senator’s family house in Obeiba-Ihima, located in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants armed with cutlasses and guns.

In a statement released on Thursday, April 17, 2025, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, who is the National Coordinator of HURIWA, expressed outrage over the attack and called for thorough investigations to arrest those responsible.

Security expert Zagazola Makama shared the news online, stating that the senator’s chief security officer, Yakubu Ovanja, had already informed authorities. According to him, the incident happened around 1:00 a.m. when at least three armed attackers broke windows and damaged parts of the building.

Makama added, “Following a distress alert, a team of security operatives from Okehi Division swiftly mobilized to the scene. While no casualties were reported and no arrests have been made, the premises were documented and preliminary investigations have commenced.”

He continued, “Police sources said the motive behind the attack remains unknown as investigations continue.”

Although Senator Natasha has not personally released a statement yet, HURIWA believes that those behind the attack may be people threatened by her bold activism and fight for justice. The group described her as one of the most respected voices pushing for equality and democracy in Nigeria.

“We are calling on the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services to ensure that no harm happens to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan because any untoward development around her person is a direct affront to national security,” the group said.

They also added, “The entirety of the organised civil society organisations in Nigeria are solidly behind her. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has on many occasions alleged that there were active plots to assassinate her. Whilst we are not in any position to deny or affirm her allegations, we are calling on the security forces to do everything humanly possible to keep Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan away from harm. Her life must be safeguarded at all costs. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has not committed any crimes that should warrant this level of antagonism and targeted attacks on her person. We urge all the aggrieved persons and her political rivals to follow the due process of the law and not resort to self-help measures.”
