Two Teams Seal Automatic Premier League Promotion
By Benjamin Abioye

Burnley and Leeds have officially secured automatic promotion to the Premier League after crucial victories over Sheffield United and Stoke City, confirming their spots with just two games left in the season.
Burnley have officially secured automatic promotion to the English Premier League after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sheffield United. The win not only confirmed their place in the top flight but also guaranteed that Leeds United, currently leading the Championship table, would join them.
Earlier in the day, Leeds displayed dominant form with a crushing 6-0 win over Stoke City, pushing their total points to 94 with just two matches remaining. To confirm their promotion, Burnley needed to avoid defeat against Sheffield United—and they delivered.
Josh Brownhill emerged as the hero for Burnley, scoring both goals in a spirited performance. He found the back of the net with a composed equaliser, assisted by Tom Cannon, and later sealed the victory.
“It was a fantastic team effort,” Brownhill said after the match. “We knew what was at stake and we gave everything.”
Sheffield United, coached by Scott Parker, now face uncertainty. After being relegated the previous season, they remain in third place with 86 points and will have to fight for promotion through the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Leeds fans were treated to a spectacular show at Elland Road, where Joel Piroe scored a hat-trick in just the first 20 minutes. He added a fourth goal just before halftime, giving Leeds a commanding 5-0 lead at the break.
“This means everything,” said Piroe. “We’ve worked so hard to get back here.”
Leeds’ triumph marks their return to the Premier League after being relegated in 2023, ending a difficult stretch after spending three straight seasons in the top division.
In other matches, Sunderland—currently fourth—have secured a playoff place, even though they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at home. That victory has kept Blackburn’s playoff hopes alive as they continue to chase a top-six finish.
Bristol City, in fifth place, took a hit after a 3-1 loss to relegation-threatened Luton Town. However, they remain just ahead of Coventry City, who also lost 3-1, this time to bottom-placed Plymouth Argyle.
Middlesbrough, sitting in seventh, missed a big chance to close in on the playoff spots. They were beaten 2-1 by Sheffield Wednesday, despite taking an early lead.
With only two games left in the season, the race for playoff places is tight. Bristol City are on 67 points, Coventry have 66, and Middlesbrough are still in the chase with 63. Millwall and Blackburn are also still in contention, holding 63 and 62 points respectively.
As the season draws to a close, the battle for playoff positions is heating up, with several teams still in the running for a shot at promotion.
