What Dominican Citizenship Means For Diezani
By Chuks Ekpeneru
Former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Diezani Allison Madueke, may have carefully planned how to navigate her way out of the very many law enforcement agencies on her heels going by the revelation of her she carefully secured the citizenship of the Commonwealth of Dominican Republic.
At a time she was called the “Queen of Black Gold” and is alleged to have amassed so much wealth, which may have made it easy for her to worm her way into the hands of leaders of the Dominican Republic.
She is wanted in Nigeria for sundry allegations of corruption, including fraudulent ownership of 76 properties in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, valued at about N23 billion.
Besides, she has a 14-count charge bordering on stealing and concealment of $153 million already preferred against her by the EFCC.
Today as a fugitive from her home land, she is shielded by her citizenship of the Commonwealth of Dominican Republic, where she serves as a Trade and Investment Commissioner.
She is backed by a 32-page diplomatic passport which contains a restraining order against any arrest or prosecution.
The strange immunity order says:” The President of the Commonwealth of Dominica requests and requires in the name of the Government of Dominica all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary”.
Her Dominican Republic Diplomatic Passport’s number is DP0000445.
Dizeani also has an advantage of having British citizenship which has effectively curtailed efforts of the EFCC in repatriating her to answer charges.
The EFCC claims to have made several efforts without much efforts.
Not too long ago, EFCC acting chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu had urged Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom to protest to the authorities there over what he claimed as the shield being given to Diezani.
