New Controversy Dogs Tinubu’s Qatar Visit
Supporters of President Bola Tinubu were on Sunday evening mum as critics took to X, formerly known as Twitter to criticize a trending video of the president touring a museum in Qatar that came online just about the time that looters were descending on an Abuja warehouse in search of food.
GWG.ng reports that in a badly timed PR fiasco, the video of President touring the museum with members of his entourage to Qatar came as Nigerians were digesting the shock of the looting of food items in the warehouse of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.
It is not known when the tour took place. But critics were quick to wade in that it added to the controversy over the visit.
GWG.ng reports that ahead of the Qatar visit that a leaked memo from the Qatari Embassy in Abuja surfaced in the media in which it was disclosed that senior Qatar officials would not be available for a business summit during the president’s visit.
That controversy added to the uproar over the inclusion of two of the president’s sons on the trip.
The criticisms were partly doused by senior government officials who sought to explain the rationality of the visit and the inclusion of the president’s children in the business delegation.
However, the resort of President Tinubu touring the museum in Qatar at a time of serious emergencies in Nigeria drew the attention of many critics of the administration.
The closest that came to a defence of the president over the looting of the NEMA warehouse was a post by Reno Omokri in which he took exception to the post that referenced Nigeria as a rich nation.
GWG.ng gathered some of the reactions of the tour of the museum by President Tinubu on X:
