Man Arrested in Awka for Killing Sacred Monkey
A middle-aged man was apprehended by Awka indigenes on Wednesday, March 6, for the alleged killing of a monkey in the community. Monkeys hold a revered status in the entire Awka kingdom, where they are considered sacred animals, and their killing is viewed as a sacrilegious act.
The Awka people have a longstanding tradition of reverence for monkeys, stemming from the worship of the Imo Awka god, whose shrine is situated in the Amaenyi area of the town. Throughout the kingdom, it is common to see monkeys freely roaming about in people’s compounds without any form of harassment.
The arrested man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was captured in a viral video confessing to the act. He admitted to having lived in Awka for 24 years and being fully aware of the community’s strict prohibition against killing or consuming monkeys. According to his confession, he had set a trap in the bush with the intention of capturing other forms of bush meat for consumption. However, to his dismay, it was a monkey that got caught in the trap.
Expressing remorse for his actions, the man pleaded for mercy, acknowledging the severity of his offense. Despite initial apprehension from the indigenes, who grappled with the implications of the sacrilege, they ultimately decided against taking punitive measures. Instead, they opted to spare the man’s life while initiating steps to appease the deity of the land and forestall any potential repercussions.
Details regarding the man’s origin and identity remain undisclosed at the time of reporting.
