The Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) military has successfully thwarted an attempted coup d’etat involving Congolese and foreign fighters.

According to army spokesperson Sylvain Ekenge, the situation is now under control, and several suspects have been detained.

In a televised address on state-run RTNC TV, Ekenge revealed that the attempted coup occurred on Sunday morning, May 19, and involved both Congolese and foreign nationals. The leader of the attempted coup has been put out of action, along with several others involved.

The attempted coup comes amid a dispute within the ruling party over the postponement of an election for the leadership of the national assembly. President Felix Tshisekedi, who was reelected in December 2023, met with parliamentarians and party leaders on Friday to resolve the crisis.

Earlier on Sunday, armed men attacked the residence of Vital Kamerhe, a former chief of staff and close ally of President Tshisekedi. The residence, located about two kilometers from the presidential palace, was targeted in a shootout that left three people dead, including two police officers and one of the attackers.

The DRC military has assured citizens that the situation is now under control, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the masterminds behind the attempted coup.
