Ighalo on tithing

Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has reaffirmed his commitment to tithing 10% of his earnings to God, regardless of how much he makes.

Speaking on a podcast, Ighalo shared how he first learned about tithing while playing for Julius Berger in 2005. At just 16 years old, he earned ₦15,000 as his first salary and was taught the importance of tithing by his pastor.

“I started paying tithe since 2005, and till today I have not missed my tithe,” Ighalo said.

However, he admitted that he once struggled with the idea of tithing after securing a lucrative contract in China. The significant increase in his income made him question whether he should continue giving the same percentage.

“Devil wanted to play with me when I went to China and I’m earning big money and I saw 10% of my tithe. Devil was playing with my mind. I thought about it. Month end, I got my salary, I did not send money yet,” he revealed.

Faced with doubt, Ighalo turned to prayer for guidance and received a clear answer—to remain faithful to what had always worked for him.

“But I prayed one day, God said don’t change the winning formula. If you can be faithful with little, you’ll be faithful with any amount,” he continued.

He emphasized that no matter how much he earns in the future, he will always set aside 10% for God.

“Like I am now, I don’t care any amount I’m going to earn in life today, 10% is for God,” he said.

Addressing critics who question his choice, Ighalo made it clear that his actions are based on his faith, not public opinion.

“I know some people will say you are giving it to the pastor. It’s not my problem. I do according to the word of God,” he concluded.
