Suspense Trails Tinubu-Fubara Secret London Talks

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly met with suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in London as part of efforts to resolve the ongoing political crisis rocking the oil-rich state.

According to The Africa Report, the private meeting took place last week shortly after President Tinubu left Paris. Sources familiar with the development disclosed that the meeting was initiated at Fubara’s request, as the embattled governor is desperate to reclaim his seat following his suspension and the president’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

During the meeting, Fubara was said to have offered to make compromises to ease the political tensions. A senior aide to the president, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, revealed that negotiations are ongoing and hinted that Fubara’s suspension could be lifted before the six-month deadline.

“Negotiations are ongoing, but from all indications, his suspension will be lifted before the six-month deadline,” the aide said.

Another presidential insider confirmed that Fubara is also considering joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move seen as a political strategy to align himself with the presidency and secure a stronger foothold ahead of future elections.

“If Fubara joins the APC, it means the president’s chances of winning Rivers State are much higher,” the source noted.

Interestingly, former Rivers governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike — widely known to be Fubara’s political godfather — was not part of the London meeting. Sources say Wike was displeased about being left out of the talks.

Nevertheless, President Tinubu is expected to convene a reconciliation meeting involving Fubara, Wike, and the Rivers State House of Assembly members in a bid to bring a lasting resolution to the crisis that has polarized the state’s political structure.
