ABC News To Pay $15m For Lying Against Trump
ABC News has reached a settlement in a defamation lawsuit filed by President-elect Donald Trump, agreeing to pay $15 million and issue a public apology.
The lawsuit stemmed from an incorrect statement made by George Stephanopoulos, an anchor at ABC News, during a broadcast earlier this year.
The controversy began on March 10, when Stephanopoulos claimed that Trump had been found liable for rape during an interview with Republican Representative Nancy Mace. However, the New York jury had actually found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a civil case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll, but not for rape as defined by New York law.
Under the terms of the settlement, ABC News has agreed to contribute the $15 million to a presidential foundation and museum Trump plans to establish. Additionally, the network will pay $1 million to cover Trump’s legal fees. As part of the agreement, ABC News will also publish an editor’s note expressing regret for the erroneous statements made by Stephanopoulos.
A spokesperson for ABC News stated, “We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms outlined in the court filing.” The spokesperson also reiterated the network’s commitment to journalistic integrity and accuracy.
This settlement came just as a federal judge in Florida had ordered both Trump and Stephanopoulos to give depositions in the case. With the settlement in place, these depositions are no longer necessary.
Trump’s legal disputes with major media outlets have been widely reported, and this case marks a rare victory for him. He has previously filed lawsuits against networks like CNN and CBS, though not all have resulted in favorable outcomes.
The funds from this settlement will go toward a non-profit organization connected to Trump’s future presidential library. While the $15 million will be significant, it is only a small portion of the overall cost for the library project, which is expected to be a large-scale endeavor.
