Obaseki Goes To Oshiomhole’s ‘House’ To Pick Form

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State is on his way to purchase the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship nomination form from the national secretariat of the party in Abuja.

On the way, the governor it was learnt is expected to pass through Lagos where he is expected to hold a delayed consultation with a senior ranking party chieftain generally known to have an influence on the governor’s estranged political godfather, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

It was, however, not disclosed if the governor would meet Oshiomhole at the party secretariat when he visits during the week. The duty of selling and handing over the form is that of the National Organising Secretary.

However, as a matter of courtesy, governors and visitors sometimes make a detour to pay a courtesy call on the national chairman when they visit the national secretariat.

Four years ago when he made his debut on the political stage, the job of picking the form was done for him by the APC National Assembly caucus of the party led by Senator Francis Alimekhena.

However, Senator Alimekhena the only APC senator from Edo State has, however, shied away from the crisis between Oshiomhole and Obaseki and is not expected to be present when the governor picks the form. Also a handsome majority of the APC caucus in the House of Representatives is also not aligned towards the governor.

Speaking four years ago when he purchased the form on behalf of Obaseki, Senator Alimekhena said:

“artisans, Edo National Assembly caucus and other supporters contributed the money to buy the APC forms because Obaseki is the man to carry on from where Comrade Oshiomhole will stop.”

He was accompanied to the secretariat by Philip Shuaibu who was at that time a member of the House of Representatives and who eventually became deputy governor.

Also on the delegation was Peter Akpatanson a member of the House of Representatives who has now taken position against the governor and is with Oshiomhole.

Ahead of the call at the secretariat of the Oshiomhole led National Working Committee, NWC, the governor was being expected to smoothen his way with a visit to a prominent Lagos based chieftain of the party.

The meeting which had been in the works for sometime was according to sources to hold on Sunday evening at the Ikoyi, Lagos base of the influential party chieftain.

The Lagos chieftain, according to sources had made some “difficult” demands on the governor among which were the inauguration of the 14 Oshiomhole inclined members of the House of Assembly.

A second demand which was yet to be confirmed was the ‘impossible’ request that the deputy governor, Philip Shuaibu should be dropped from the second term ticket.

Following the meeting the governor is expected to proceed to Abuja to pick the form for the primaries where he is expected to slug it out against a consensus aspirant coming out from the Oshiomhole tendency of the party in Edo State.

Comrade Oshiomhole is expected to set up a committee to supervise the primaries.

The Oshiomhole shadow had not been expected to haunt the governor following the March peace pact brokered between the two factions by the deceased Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari.

His death within one month of the pact has, however, reset the permutations for the gladiators in the state with the looming showdown between the governor and his erstwhile political benefactor.
