Why FAAN Announced Closure Of Enugu Airport
By Benjamin Abioye

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu to facilitate necessary runway repairs.
According to a statement released on Saturday, the closure is due to a significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a crucial section of the runway.
FAAN confirmed that emergency repairs will take place from April 22 to May 6, 2025. The airport will be closed during this period, and no flights will be allowed to land or take off. FAAN emphasized that this decision complies with Nigerian civil aviation regulations and is aimed at ensuring passenger safety and the continued modernization of airport facilities.
In response, the authority appealed for understanding from airport users and stakeholders, adding that all flights to and from the airport will be diverted to nearby airports. FAAN also apologized for the short notice regarding the closure.
Air Peace, one of the major airlines operating in the region, announced the suspension of all flights to Enugu due to the deteriorating condition of the runway. The airline cited the safety risks posed by the airport’s infrastructure, which has been causing major disruptions to flights. In a statement, Air Peace said, “At Air Peace, we prioritise safety first over convenience,” and called for urgent intervention from the authorities.
All Air Peace flights scheduled for Enugu will now operate from Asaba, Delta State. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the change and assured passengers that the decision was made to allow FAAN to complete the necessary repairs.
Ibom Air also announced the suspension of all flights to and from Enugu for the duration of the repairs. The airline said it would reach out to affected passengers and encouraged them to explore alternative travel options through their offices at Lagos, Abuja, or Enugu airports. Ibom Air emphasized that passenger safety remains its top priority and expressed hope for the resumption of full operations once the runway is repaired.
