Woman Dies After Being Set On Fire In A Train
A woman tragically died after being set on fire on a subway train in Brooklyn, New York.
The incident occurred on a stationary F train when a man approached the victim and set her clothing ablaze using a lighter. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the act “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being.” The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, died at the scene.
The attack took place around 7:30 AM at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. Authorities say the victim and the man did not interact before the incident.
The man quickly exited the train as officers, who were patrolling the station, noticed smoke and rushed to the scene. “What they saw was a person standing inside the train car fully engulfed in flames,” Tisch explained.
The suspect remained at the station, sitting on a bench just outside the train. Officers, who had seen a clear image of him, circulated the description. Later, three high school students recognized the man on a different train and alerted the police. He was arrested at Herald Square station in Manhattan, found with a lighter in his pocket.
Detectives are still trying to identify the motive behind the attack and the circumstances surrounding the victim’s position in the train. Police are also investigating whether the woman was asleep when the crime occurred. “She’s definitely there, she’s motionless,” said Detective Gulotta, adding, “There is no interaction between the two.” The case continues to unfold as authorities work to gather more details.
