A South Korean teacher in her 40s has confessed to stabbing and killing an 8-year-old girl at an elementary school in Daejeon, leading to widespread shock and an ongoing police investigation.

A tragic incident occurred in South Korea, where an eight-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by her teacher at an elementary school in Daejeon.

The teacher, a woman in her 40s, admitted to stabbing the young student, police confirmed. The girl was found with multiple stab wounds on the second floor of the school building around 6:00 PM local time on Monday. She was later declared dead at the hospital. The teacher was found next to the girl, also injured with stab wounds, which police suspect may have been self-inflicted.

In response to the shocking incident, South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, ordered an investigation and urged authorities to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future. “It pains me to see such an incident because a school should be our safest space,” he said, offering his “deep condolences to the victim’s family who suffered great shock and agony.”

Locals expressed their grief by laying flowers and stuffed toys outside the school, which was closed the following day. According to the Daejeon education office, the teacher had requested a six-month leave of absence for depression in December but returned to work just 20 days later after a doctor cleared her to resume duties. Authorities emphasized that the teacher did not have any relationship with the student.

Before the stabbing, the teacher had exhibited violent behavior, including an altercation with another teacher, whom she reportedly put in a headlock. The Daejeon education office had sent two officials to the school on the morning of the stabbing to investigate that incident. Later that day, the young girl was reported missing when the bus driver informed the school she hadn’t arrived for pickup.

The teacher had been kept under close supervision after the earlier altercation and was seated next to the vice principal’s desk. She had not been teaching since her leave in December and had no direct contact with the student involved. Police stated they would continue questioning the teacher once she recovered from surgery.

Despite South Korea’s reputation for safety and strict gun control, the country has been grappling with several high-profile violent crimes, including stabbings, in recent years.
